Fans were crushed when Game of Thrones ended three years ago (although not just because it was ending). The sheer amount of possible sequels and spin-off series within George R. R. Martin’s universe, addressing comparable subjects and having just as much action, was a silver lining.

House of the Dragon is a Game of Thrones prequel that explores the Targaryens of the past and their family’s collapse. Those who haven’t seen GoT can still enjoy HotD, plus there are lots of other shows that contain themes and action that are similar to House of the Dragon.

Best TV Series Like House Of The Dragon

10. The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom is a historical fiction series set in the year 872 in England. The show is rated 18 because it contains nudity, violence, gore, language, and intense and potentially unsettling sequences. Its plot revolves around a man protecting his kingdom from invaders, and there are problems with ownership and birthrights throughout the realm.

While it is preferable to keep reality and fiction distinct, The Last Kingdom shares many similarities with the historically-inspired Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. It’s also an equally intense series that’s clearly aimed at adults and doesn’t shy away from sex and violence.

9. Outlander

Outlander

This popular fantasy drama’s success has grown by word of mouth over the years, and the show is still going strong, with the seventh season and a prequel on the way.

The series is based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels and follows a Second World War nurse (Caitriona Balfe) who is transported back in time to 1742 and finds herself thrown together with Scottish warrior Jamie (Sam Heughan).

The series, which combines romance, science fiction, history, and adventure, has amassed one of the most devoted global fan groups.

8. Grimm

Grimm

Grimm is a great series to watch because there are so many seasons and no wait time since it ended in 2017. Grimm, like HotD, has a fantastical element, and numerous odd monsters emerge from the woodwork throughout the series. Grimm, on the other hand, frequently goes into the supernatural as the main character, Nick, battles the horrific forces that surround him.

Grimm and HotD both contain dark themes and supernatural violence. Grimm, like HotD, is smart, well-written, and well-produced, especially for a show that debuted in 2011.

7. Being Human

Being Human

Being Human is a comedy/drama about the unseen supernatural world that lurks in the streets of Bristol. It is home to a number of supernatural creatures, including ghosts, werewolves, and vampires, three of whom share an apartment. Being Human, as a violent dark fantasy, shares many similarities with HotD, but it is less concerned with a monarchy and more concerned with regular life.

Being Human is darker than HotD and frequently borders on horror. The supernatural entities at the heart of the program disguise themselves as humans in order to blend in and avoid exposure, persecution, and death. Whether it’s royal ancestry or survival on a dangerous planet, both series focus on duplicity, fear, and dealing with something far bigger than oneself.

6. Disenchantment

Disenchantment

The dark mood of House of the Dragon can get a little suffocating after a while, so it’s reasonable if fans want something lighter as a palate cleanser. Disenchantment is a satirical fantasy that, while distinct from HotD, contains many characteristics.

Princess Bean, the show’s hero, is a rebellious princess with white blonde hair. Disenchantment, like HoD, enjoys subverting fantasy cliches. The program is filled with untrustworthy magicians, strange fantastical creatures, and unexpectedly deep conspiracies. It can satisfy a Martin fan’s thirst while also providing some respite from Westeros’ sex and gore.

5. The Wheel of Time

The Wheel of Time

With 90 million novels sold worldwide, The Wheel of Time is one of the most popular and successful fantasy series of all time.

The series is founded on the notion that there is magic in the universe that only certain women are allowed to access, and it has the typical extensive settings found in a large fantasy franchise.

In 2021, Prime Video will release Robert Jordan’s 15-book fantasy masterpiece. Rosamund Pike and Sophie Okonedo star in the film.

4. The Sandman

The Sandman

This fantasy/drama series is based on Neil Gaiman’s legendary Vertigo title The Sandman, which comic book readers may remember. The Netflix show has received accolades for its excellent aesthetics and for staying true to the concept presented in the comics. Both shows are renowned for their extravagant adaptations of well-known literature.

The Sandman is about the Dream of the Endless being captured and his abilities and powers being stolen for the benefit of the privileged and powerful. However, his confinement has a negative impact on the rest of the world. This is a story with mature themes, similar to HotD, about a king as old as time who is finally coming into his authority.

3. The Witcher

The Witcher

Many HotD viewers may have heard of or seen The Witcher, but it is the ideal series for fans looking for something similar. This is the series for those who want more violence and excitement. So far, there have been two seasons of The Witcher, which revolve around Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who wanders around looking for work.

Geralt’s line of employment involves murdering monsters for a living, and he comes across a lot of them. There are numerous battles, and it is not always evident who will win. Even though it focuses on an outcast who stares into the abyss on a regular basis, it’s a show full of suspense, dragons, and incestuous monarchy.

2. The Crown

The Crown

The Netflix series The Crown not only stars Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen in HotD, but it also follows very similar hardships and lessons. HotD is only concerned with the throne and the Targaryen line of succession. Fans searching for a calmer but comparable series may go no further than The Crown.

Unlike HotD, The Crown is set in a fictionalized version of the twentieth century and follows the British royal family behind closed doors. It’s a drama that imagines the reality behind the royals’ secrets and lives, extrapolating from what we know about the royals’ history. There isn’t much fire and blood here, but the stakes are nonetheless surprisingly high for a family that clings to and avoids the spotlight.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

this is a joke pls don’t bully me

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Rings of Power or House of the Dragon? Why not both?

Both big fantasy series debuted with massive promotional campaigns at the end of the summer, but there’s no reason to pick one over the other.

The Rings of Power, like House of the Dragon, is a prologue to a beloved franchise that debuted with high hopes from fans. The series has managed to live up to the anticipation by providing a magnificent introduction to Tolkien’s Second Age of Middle-earth.

To capture the majesty and scale of Tolkien’s stories, no money has been spared. Season 1 has progressively built up the enormous assortment of characters and plotlines, from elves and dwarves to harfoots and men, while a typical evil lurks in the shadows.

BONUS: Shadow And Bone

Shadow And Bone

Shadow and Bone, like House of the Dragon, is a Netflix series based on a fantasy book series. “Shadow and Bone” is based in the Grisha universe, whereas HotD is set in Westeros. Grisha, like Westeros, has magic, and a mystic order with the ability to call natural elements such as fire.

The Targaryen dynasty relies on their affinity for dragons and fire to control Westeros. Shadow and Bone, on the other hand, is geared at a younger audience than HotD, but it still has a strong feeling of drama and intrigue, with several plot surprises on the horizon.
