AI is Taking Over the World of Illustration in China
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The world and the industries that support it are changing at a rapid pace. Artificial intelligence (AI) has grown in popularity in a variety of fields, including healthcare, finance, and entertainment. AI appears to be making its way into the world of illustration.

Rest of World recently spoke with freelance illustrator Amber Yu, who revealed that large Chinese gaming companies have begun to use AI to generate game illustrations. Illustrators like Amber could make a good living for many years by creating video game posters and other designs. They would spend hours sketching and fine-tuning their drawings with software such as Adobe Photoshop. However, with the advent of AI-generated art, their livelihoods are in jeopardy.

Amber Yu observed a steep decline in illustration jobs, with gaming companies only paying a small fee for artists to fix minor flaws in AI-generated images. Xu Yingying, an illustrator at a Chinese independent game art studio, has seen five of her 15 coworkers lose their jobs this year as a result of the rise of AI image generation.

The impact of AI-generated art is felt not only in terms of job losses but also in terms of quality. Because the quality of AI-generated art has become so exceptional, some illustrators are reportedly leaving the industry entirely. The fear is that in the future, AI-generated art will become the norm, leaving human illustrators out completely.

Of course, the rise of AI-generated art is not limited to China. AI is being used to create everything from movie scripts to music to fashion designs in other parts of the world. However, the impact is especially noticeable in China, where the gaming industry is a major player.

So, what does this mean for illustration’s future? Will AI completely replace human artists, or will human creativity always have a place? The truth is that we don’t know. AI-generated art is still in its early stages, and many questions remain about how it will develop in the coming years.

But one thing is certain: the rise of AI-generated art serves as a reminder that we must be adaptable and willing to embrace change. As technology advances, new opportunities, and challenges will emerge, and we must be prepared to meet them. Illustrators may need to learn new skills or find new ways to collaborate with AI software.

Finally, the impact of AI-generated art will be determined by how we use it. We can either use it to completely replace human creativity, or we can use it to enhance and supplement it. We have a choice.

Let us know what are your thoughts on companies using AI instead of hiring artists in the comments below!
